Rock Wool

Rock wool is a popular growing medium in hydroponics due to its excellent water retention, aeration properties, and stability. It’s made from volcanic rock and limestone, melted down and spun into fibers, then formed into blocks, cubes, or slabs.
In hydroponic systems, rock wool serves as a support structure for plant roots while allowing for optimal air and water circulation. It’s commonly used for starting seeds or propagating cuttings, as well as for growing larger plants in systems like drip irrigation or nutrient film technique (NFT).
To use rock wool in hydroponics:
Preparation: Soak the rock wool cubes or slabs in water with a balanced pH level (around 5.5 to 6.5) for a few hours before use to ensure they’re fully saturated.
Planting: Once saturated, make a hole or groove in the rock wool to place your seed or cutting. Plant your seed or insert your cutting, and gently press the rock wool around it to secure it in place.
Placement: Place the rock wool cubes or slabs in your hydroponic system, ensuring they have access to water and nutrients.
Maintenance: Monitor the moisture levels of the rock wool regularly to ensure it remains moist but not waterlogged. Depending on your hydroponic system, you may need to adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Replacement: Over time, the rock wool may degrade or become too compacted, affecting its ability to support plant growth. Replace it as needed to maintain healthy plant growth.
